Concrete Sleeper Walls
Concrete sleeper retaining walls.
Steel-reinforced concrete sleepers slotted into galvanised H-posts. Built right, these walls outlast the house. The strongest, longest-lasting wall under $700/m² on the market.
Why concrete sleeper
The right wall for Pakenham’s reactive clay.
Concrete sleeper walls have become the default residential wall across the Cardinia Shire over the last 10 years — and for good reason. The system tolerates wet clay, freeze-thaw cycles, termites, ground movement, and impact loads in ways that timber simply can’t.
How the system works
- Posts: 100×100×5mm hot-dipped galvanised steel H-posts, cored into 600mm-deep concrete footings (deeper for taller walls).
- Sleepers: 200mm-thick steel-reinforced concrete sleepers, 50 MPa, slotted between the H-flanges as the wall builds up.
- Drainage: 200mm of 20mm aggregate behind every wall, wrapped in geofabric, with 100mm slotted ag-pipe to a legal stormwater outlet.
- Capping: optional concrete or stone cap on the top course for a finished look.
Finishes
Plain grey is the cheapest. We also do woodgrain texture (looks like sleeper timber but it’s concrete), exposed aggregate, and stone-effect — all factory-cast, no painting.
Cost & lifespan
- Cost: $400–$600/m² installed (includes drainage, footings, capping)
- Lifespan: 50+ years — manufacturers warrant the sleepers themselves for 25 years
- Maximum height: 2.4m unsupported, taller with engineering
When concrete sleeper is the right call
- Walls over 900mm where you don’t want to rebuild in 20 years
- Damp ground where timber will rot fast
- High-traffic areas (driveway retaining, pool surrounds)
- Permit jobs where engineering certification is needed
- Replacing a failed timber wall
